After seeing the searing, powerful "Shame," the first thing on your mind likely won't be to pick up the soundtrack to the movie. This isn't "Juno" or "(500) Days of Summer" we're talking about here. But that said, music does play a key part in establishing the very New York story that Steve McQueen conjures up here and the song selections are definitely well thought out, helping to set the tone and tempo of the film, so it's nice to see them put together on what is pretty nice little soundtrack release for the film.
Boasting 15 cuts, "Shame" delivers a rather intriguing blend of tunes, going from dancefloor classics like "Genius of Love" by Tom Tom Club and "Rapture" by Blondie to contemplative jazz, including John Coltrane's classic "My Favorite Things" and Chet Baker's "Let's Get Lost." Mixing things up is a selection of works by Bach as well as choice cuts from composer Harry Escott's haunting score. And oh yeah, Carey Mulligan's memorable, slowed down (and lengthy) version of "New York New York" is also featured here. It's certainly a far cry from Sinatra's take. All in all, it's a nice roundup of music from the movie that will also make a really awkward gift for your girlfriend/boyfriend.
You can check out the full tracklisting below — it will hit stores on December 6th. And up top, that's the excellent new U.K. poster for the movie unveiled on Twitter. [Film Music Reporter via The Film Stage]
