Shocker: 'Battleship' WON'T Be In 3D (For Now)

Well here’s something we thought we’d never report. Peter Berg’s big 2012 summer tentpole, “Battleship,” won’t be in 3D. Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner has told MTV, “No discussion of 3-D at this point. I think that this is going to be a big spectacle in and out of itself.”

While every studio in town seems to be giving their left nut to add three dimensions to whatever negligible project they’re working on, it is surprising to hear of one where the topic hasn’t come up. Yet. We’re pretty sure this won’t be the final word on the matter and we will hardly be surprised if over the next two years that decision is reversed.

The bad news is that the lame sounding aliens are still around, but Goldner seems to be downplaying the villain angle. “I think it’s a really unique story and unlike a lot of those other alien stories this is really not about aliens that came here to do us harm. So I think you’ll find the story really interesting in that it doesn’t begin as a fight,” said Goldner. Yeah, we’re guessing there will be some kind of misunderstanding blah blah blah leading to battleships blowing up lots of alien baddies or whatever.

No word yet if Jeremy Renner, who said he was circling the project, has decided to jump aboard, but he’s also being considered for another super secret project and will have to choose between the two. We imagine he won’t make that decision until after the Oscars, but c’mon Jeremy, you can do better acting than in front of green screens.
