‘Shoshana’ Trailer: Michael Winterbottom’s British-Occupation of Palestine Drama Stars Douglas Booth, Harry Melling & More

The newly released trailer for “Shoshana,” director Michael Winterbottom’s upcoming political thriller, offers a gripping preview of a film that promises to blend personal passion with historical turmoil. Set against a rapidly evolving Tel Aviv in the 1930s, the trailer introduces viewers to a volatile world on the brink of irreversible change, where love, identity, and ideology collide.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival and set for U.S. theatrical release on July 25 via Greenwich Entertainment, “Shoshana” is inspired by actual events during the British Mandate in Palestine. The trailer hints at a layered narrative, where the intimate becomes political and every personal choice is charged with consequence.

Douglas Booth stars as Thomas Wilkin, a British officer with the anti-terrorist squad of the Palestine Police, whose romance with Shoshana Borochov unfolds amid rising violence and radicalism. Irina Starshenbaum plays Shoshana as a modern, feminist intellectual caught between her ideals and loyalties. Avraham Stern (Aury Alby), the underground leader, Wilkin, is tasked with stopping, and believes that only violence can secure a Jewish homeland. Harry Melling appears as Wilkin’s partner Geoffrey Morton, equally entrenched in the mission to dismantle Stern’s insurgency.

In his review for The Playlist, Rodrigo Perez writes that “Shoshana” is “essentially a love story that also traces the origins of a deeply complex conflict that rages on to this day,” and praises Starshenbaum, saying she “easily steals the movie.” He notes the film’s central message: “the true tragedy of conflict is the impossibility of remaining neutral and how the need to take a side eventually is flawed and yet understandably human.”

Winterbottom, known for his politically charged and human-centered films, appears to be weaving a story that refuses to offer easy answers. With lush cinematography contrasting the stark brutality of the times, “Shoshana” looks poised to be as visually compelling as it is emotionally resonant.

“Shoshana” opens in theaters on July 25, distributed by Greenwich Entertainment. Watch the trailer below.
