By now, it’s more than just a flight of fancy or trend. Filmmaker Tyler Perry made his name on “Trapped In The Closet” and all his silly, pratfall-y “Madea” films and carved out massive success for himself. But ever since 2022’s romantic period drama, “A Jazzman,” the director has almost exclusively made serious movies ever since and will have released three films in 2024. The latest is “The Six Triple Eight,” a WWII drama starring Kerry Washington, coming to Netflix in December.

Written by Perry as well, based on the article “Fighting A Two-Front War” by Kevin M. Hymel published in WWII History Magazine, “The Six Triple Eight” is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.
On top of Washington, the film features a huge cast including Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Jeanté Godlock, Jay Reeves, Jeffery Johnson, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Donna Biscoe, Gregg Sulkin, Scott Daniel Johnson, Susan Sarandon, with Dean Norris, and Sam Waterston, and Oprah Winfrey.
Additionally, the film features Diane Warren‘s original song, “The Journey,” performed by H.E.R. and choreographed by Debbie Allen.
