All Star Wars movies are big, but for keeping the fans onboard with Disney’s long-term plan of galactic domination, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” might just be the biggest yet. It’s the first real attempt (except for the brief but glorious appearance of Mon Mothma in “Rogue One””) to recast not just a beloved character, but probably the most beloved character in the franchise. Additionally, coming six months on the heels of “The Last Jedi” and with not one, but two new trilogies announced recently, ‘Solo’might mark the end of the era when Star Wars movies were beloved rarities rather than pumped out multiple times a year. Finally, while most fans might not care about director drama, it will be interesting to see whether the final tone is more akin to Ron Howard or the fired duo of Lord and Miller.

But reservations aside, there’s a ton to be excited about, from the script from “The Empire Strikes Back” writer Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon, to the cast packed with young talent like Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Here’s the official ‘Solo’ synopsis:
Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.
Many Star Wars viewers prefer the colorful criminal underworld of the Mos Eisley cantina to the tormented earnestness of the Skywalker family – as Han once told Leia, “There aren’t enough scoundrels in your life.” Here’s hoping that ‘Solo’ has all the scoundrels that Star Wars fans could ever wish for. The movie will be released on May 25, 2018, but you’ll hear about it when it hits Cannes first on May 15.
