'Sonic The Hedgehog' Director Confirms Film Will Be Delayed Until 2020 To "Make Sonic Just Right"

The internet, and social media, specifically, is a powerful thing. Just by voicing your opinion, with enough supporters, you can make global change. Well, that is if you’re fans of Sonic the Hedgehog and you absolutely despise the way he looks in the first trailer for his live-action film.

It was only a few short weeks ago that the collective mind of the internet revolted against the trailer for Paramount’sSonic the Hedgehog” live-action/CGI hybrid film. While fans were pretty happy for the tone of the film and the batshit crazy work that Jim Carrey seems to be doing as Dr. Robotnik, people couldn’t get past the creepy look of the titular hero. And so, the director admitted defeat and said the studio would work tirelessly to “get it right,” which meant that the film’s lead character would have a bit of a makeover.

But you know what? Completely changing the look of a completely CGI character months before the film is scheduled to be released across the world is a massive undertaking. And according to the director Jeff Fowler’s latest update, it’s going to take more time than they were hoping. So, like it or not, “Sonic the Hedgehog” is going to race past the November release date and will now be arriving in theaters in 2020.

He tweeted, “Taking a little more time to make Sonic just right. #novfxartistswereharmedinthemakingofthismovie”

Apparently, it’s going to take three extra months for the filmmaker and his crew to get the look of the title character right. They bravely went for more of a realistic look for the character during the first attempt, giving him realistic fur and musculature. Well, as realistic as you can make a talking, bright blue, speedster hedgehog. Now, we can only assume they’re going back to basics with the character, relying more on his classic, cartoon-ish look. (“Cartoon-ish” being a compliment.)

So, as of now, barring another crucial setback (lord knows the next trailer will be under intense scrutiny), “Sonic the Hedgehog” will race into theaters on February 14, 2020. Only one week after Warner Bros. Margot Robbie-led “Birds of Prey.” Should be fun.
