Just 36 films were eligible for the Original Score Academy Award this year for a variety of reasons. That means your chances of landing on the shortlist were not so bad at almost 50/50. And for the composers of “Ammonite,” “The Invisible Man,” “Soul” and “The Little Things,” the odds were definitely in your favor.

There were few snubs among the selected scores although Hans Zimmer (“Wonder Woman 1984”), Mark Isham and Craig Harris (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), and Bruno Coulais (“Wolfwalkers”) might have a case.

It should be noted that the music in “Nomadland” did not qualify.

The 15 compositions shortlisted for the Original Score Oscar are as follows:

“Ammonite”
“Blizzard of Souls”
“Da 5 Bloods”
“The Invisible Man”
“Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey”
“The Life Ahead (La Vita Davanti a Se)”
“The Little Things”
“Mank”
“The Midnight Sky”
“Minari”
“Mulan”
“News of the World”
“Soul”
“Tenet”
“The Trial of the Chicago 7”

Nominations voting begins on Friday, March 5, 2021, and concludes on Wednesday, March 10, 2021.

Nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on Monday, March 15, 2021.
