‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Swings To $360 Million, Biggest Opening Weekend Of All Time

There is a reason the box office results released on Sundays are estimates. Studios and distributors use pre-sales and decades of data to determine those figures, and most of the time they are completely spot on. When you get past a certain threshold, however, anything can happen. On Monday, Sony Pictures received the actual box office results for Destin Daniel Cretton’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and, surprise, history has been made. The Marvel Studios production earned $360 million in the U.S., making it the highest-grossing weekend ever, surpassing “Avengers: Endgame’s” $357 million tally in 2019.

This was an incredible $5 million jump from the Sunday estimate after “Brand New Day” experienced just a 13% drop from Saturday. The blockbuster earned $169.8 million on Friday, $101.5 million on Saturday, and $88.7 million on Sunday from 4,487 locations.Worldwide, “Brand New Day” has taken in over $932 million, the second highest figure ever after “Endgame’s” $1.22 billion.

In a statement this morning, Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, said, “Wow! 360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign. Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”

Yesterday, Amy Pascal, Producer, Pascal Pictures, remarked, “We’re incredibly grateful to audiences for embracing the bold creative and deeply emotional vision Destin took with this film. It’s exciting to see such a powerful response to a story that never lost sight of what makes Peter Parker so enduring—his humanity. This remarkable opening reinforces that moviegoers are hungry for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human, and we’re thrilled to see that resonate on such a global scale.”

Kevin Feige, Producer & President, Marvel Studios, added, “This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen. This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world—and, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come.”

The last “Spider-Man” installment, “No Way Home,” eventually earned $1.92 billion. Sony and producing partner Marvel Studios are looking at potentially cracking the $2 billion mark this time around.
