Spider-Man Studio Drama: It’s Just Business For Disney & Sony [The Discourse Podcast]

Part of the journey is the end… and all things must come to an end.

On this unexpected episode of The Discourse – the show where we discuss film and television news, reviews, and anything else in the zeitgeist that we feel the need to weigh-in on – I’m joined by Playlist Editor-in-Chief Rodrigo Perez to devote an entire episode to the fallout between Disney and Sony over Spider-Man‘s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

If you clicked on this headline, chances are you already know the gist of the story so far. Disney asked for a greater slice of the Spidey pie (while also offering to put up half the budget for future films as well). Sony declined and gave a counter-offer. Disney declined said counter-offer. The basis for our discussion – and the overall thesis of the episode – is diving deeper into the situation and drawing evidence to show that neither company are the “bad guys” in this situation. On a creative and logistical storytelling level, it’s a bummer. But from a business standpoint, both parties made completely sound decisions with neither having any reason to cave to the other. We discuss all of those reasons in full, offer counterpoints to the assumptions that any further films will be bad without Marvel’s creative input, and even give examples of how these films can actually work logically going forward.
