'Spider-Verse' Filmmaker Says No A.I. Is Being Used In Third Film & "There Never Will Be"

The ‘Spider-Verse’ films are two of the most successful animated films in recent memory. Both financially and critically, ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ and ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ have wowed audiences with their inventive use of animation styles. That’s not going to change with the third film, ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse.’ And don’t worry, the filmmakers responsible for the franchise aren’t going to be using A.I. shortcuts for the third film.

Over on X, Chris Miller, one of the producers and creative masterminds behind the ‘Spider-Verse’ films, replied to a fan pleading that the filmmakers wouldn’t use generative A.I. in the making of the third film in the franchise.

“There is no generative AI in ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ and there never will be,” Miller said. “One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work.”

Generative A.I. is the technology we’ve seen all over social media over the past couple of years. The most common usage is with apps that allow written prompts to be turned into images. But professionally, we’ve seen it used in apps like Photoshop that allows for aspects of already existing images to be manipulated (adding a sky, deleting photobombers, etc…).

There have already been instances where A.I. has been used in live-action films. One of the more recent controversies happened with the horror film, “Late Night with the Devil,” where the filmmakers utilized generative A.I. to create interstitial images in the film.

But as Miller said, it would be incredibly shocking to see a ‘Spider-Verse’ film use that technology considering one of the best parts of the franchise is seeing how animators push the limits of the genre. And it’s now clear that at least one of the filmmakers responsible for the film is completely against its usage.

The third film in the franchise, “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” doesn’t yet have a release date.
