Spike Jonze Hired As “Artist In Residence” At IMAX To Help Bring Unique Projects To The Format

No matter what type of films you enjoy, there’s something special about watching a film in IMAX. The massive screen just immerses you into the story in a way that traditional movie theaters (and the largest home theater systems) can’t. But unfortunately, IMAX is completely dependent on blockbuster films and museum-esque documentaries. IMAX knows this and is trying to fix that issue with the help of none other than Spike Jonze.

According to Variety, Jonze has been hired as an “artist in residence” at IMAX and will be at the forefront of the company’s future plans. The filmmaker now finds himself as a person that will work with IMAX to help diversify the company’s film lineups, searching for new, innovative ways to attract moviegoers to its premium format.

“I love seeing movies in IMAX,” Jonze said. “I love the room. I love the sound. I love the picture. The possibilities and their openness to experiment with things that can be done in that room — whether in film, music, live, or beyond — are very exciting to me.”

Spike Jonze has always been on the cutting edge of filmmaking. At least, creatively. His projects range from music videos (which have become some of the most iconic in the medium’s history), films, and shorts. His film work, in particular, is incredibly eclectic, with projects like “Her,” “Where the Wild Things Are,” and producing the “Jackass” films.

Megan Colligan, president of IMAX Entertainment, said, “When Spike and I sat down to talk about this, the ideas just flowed organically. He has a real sense of what’s happening in the culture and he’s been operating on the cutting edge of a lot of different spaces.”

She added, “It’s important that we work hard to diversify voices and find all sorts of content that can satisfy all types of audiences.”

We have yet to see the fruits of Jonze’s labor yet, but we are hopeful that the filmmaker is going to help bring some great things to IMAX theaters.
