After the attempted reboot-quel, “Jigsaw,” didn’t necessarily light up the box office and reinvigorate the “Saw” franchise, many just assumed that Lionsgate would likely just move on. And with “Spiral” arriving in theaters in a little under two months, we have our latest trailer that shows Chris Rock’s vision for the “Saw” franchise. In the film, Rock plays a police detective that is investigating a series of murders that seem to be somehow related to the past crimes related to Jigsaw, as a spiral is left at each of the scenes. Joining Rock in the cast are Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, based on a pitch from Rock. Bousman is no stranger to the “Saw” franchise, having helped three of the franchise’s sequels over the years. Most recently, he directed the horror-thriller, “Death of Me.”
“Spiral” is set to arrive in theaters on May 14. You can watch the new trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.
