'Starstruck' Trailer: A Celebrity Hook-Up With An Aimless Millenial Becomes Something More On HBO Max

Chance are you don’t know New Zealand comedian, actress, and TV presenter, Rose Matafeo (“Baby Done,” “Horndog”), a writer and performer on the NZ late-night comedy sketch show “Funny Girls.” January saw Rose star in the feature film “Baby Done” From producer Taika Waititi, while she has featured on BAFTA-winning “Taskmaster” (Ch4), “Have I Got News For You” (BBC One), and many more.  But man, she is funny! And American media noticed (the U.K. was obviously already hip to her charms) what the Comedy Awards recently dubbed the “voice of millennials.”

In August 2019, HBO Max and BBC Three announced they had ordered a scripted comedy created by, written by, and starring Matafe, entitled “Starstruck.” The show would be broadcast by BBC Three in the U.K. and be available for streaming on HBO Max, and now, it’s finally here and debuts June 10 on HBO Max.

The romantic comedy is co-written by Matafeo and Alice Snedden and produced by Avalon. “Starstruck” follows Jessie (Matafeo), a millennial living in East London juggling two dead-end jobs and navigating the awkward morning-after-the-night-before when she discovers the complications of accidentally sleeping with a famous movie star Tom (Nikesh Patel). What she thought would become an amusing anecdote soon turns into something more, as the couple realizes they can’t keep away from each other. The ensemble cast also includes Sindhu VeeEmma Sidi, and  Minnie Driver (“Good Will Hunting”).
 
Produced by Avalon (“Breeders,” “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay,” “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”), “Starstruck” is executive produced by Rose Matafeo, Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner, and Rob Aslett. Toby Welch is a series producer. Karen Maine (“Yes, God, Yes”) directed the six-episode season.
