Sometime’s it difficult to separate a film or TV project from the headlines that follow it. And with the upcoming streaming series “Swamp Thing,” it’s almost impossible to watch the new trailer and not immediately think about what would cause DC Universe to cut the production short and limit the first season from 13 episodes to 10 for creative reasons.
Well, even though you might not be able to forget that as you watch the new trailer, the footage of “Swamp Thing” actually looks interesting, if only because it looks very different than the other superhero TV series that DC Universe has released. For those not familiar with the comic book the show is based on, the streaming show tells the story of Abby Arcane, who visits a Louisiana swamp to investigate a virus that. And as you can probably guess from the title, while there, she encounters a thing…from the swamp.
If there’s one major disappointment to be taken from this first trailer, it’s the absence of the titular character in the footage. We get a lot of swamp. We get a lot of scary stuff, courtesy of producer James Wan, no doubt. But we don’t actually get much of the Thing in the swamp, except for a quick bit of footage at the end, which doesn’t do much to excite fans of the comic book series.
That being said, with the obvious unique tone for the series, leaning heavily into the comic book’s horror roots, this could be something that is worth checking out on DC Universe, even if you’re not a traditional fan of superhero content.
“Swamp Thing” premieres on the DC Universe streaming service on May 31.
Here’s the synopsis:
