‘Sweetsick’: Cate Blanchett Toplines Alice Birch’s Feature Directorial Debut At Searchlight

We’ve learned that two-time Oscar-winning Australian actress Cate Blanchett (“Black Bag”) has been cast in “Sweetsick,” the feature directorial debut of Alice Birch, as the pic has landed at the Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures.

Birch was the co-writer of Lynne Ramsay‘s recent effort “Die My Love,” along with other projects such as Florence Pugh‘s breakout “Lady Macbeth,” worked on HBO‘s “Succession,” “Normal People,” “The Wonder,” “The End We Star From,” and the Rachel Weisz-led “Dead Ringers” series reboot based on the David Cronenberg film.

Filming on “Sweetsick” will begin this fall with locations to include the United Kingdom and Greece, with a producing team to feature Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, and Theo Barrowclough from House Productions (“Conclave,” “Mint,” “The Wonder”) alongside Blanchett and her Dirty Films banner, Lee Groombridge, and Film4 will executive produce and co-finance, as well.

An official logline for the new pic, courtesy of Searchlight:

Sweetsick follows a mercurial woman (Blanchett) with a strange and piercing gift – the ability to see what others most intimately need, often at great personal cost – who sets out on a journey home.

“I could not be more excited to be making my debut feature as a director with such an extraordinary team of filmmakers and collaborators. I am in the safest hands with Tessa Ross and her brilliant team at House, and am so proud to be working with Searchlight and Film4. To have the peerless Cate Blanchett at the centre of it is thrilling,” Birch said in an official statement on the announcement of “Sweetsick.”

More casting announcements for “Sweetsick” are expected to be made in the coming weeks and months, but with Blanchett set as the lead, things are coming together nicely for Birch’s directorial debut.
