It’s really starting to feel like “Reacher” star Alan Ritchson is going to take a role in James Gunn‘s newly formed DCU, after he was asked about the potential recruitment on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival while promoting his new movie “Motor City.”
Ritchson spoke with Liam Saul (aka, liamlovesmovies), where he was directly asked about returning to the Aquaman role (now that Jason Momoa is playing Lobo in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” and more DCU projects beyond that), and potentially taking on something else like Justice Society of America member, Wildcat. With the latter, he says it could be “fun.”
“No, I would never take that from [Jason Momoa]. I have too much respect…I would definitely want to explore new horizons, and I have a feeling we may. We’ll see,” Ritchson said of returning to the Aquaman role and ultimately joining the evolving DCU.
This downplay of his desire to do the Aquaman role, again, after playing Arthur Curry in the “Smallville” universe, isn’t terribly shocking. Ritchson also played Hawk in the recent mature “Titans” series, so his connections to DC roles are strong. But, it sounds like Ritchson seems keen to find a NEW role for himself in the DCU. Even if Aquaman and seemingly Batman in “The Brave & The Bold” are likely off the table, there are MANY DC roles to fill, and Ritchson sounds game for something fun; Gunn certainly could deliver on that.
We should note that if Prime Video wants to keep “Reacher” going, his scheduling could be a slight issue, as the popular streaming series continuing beyond Season 4 (currently filming in Ontario, Canada) would be assumed.
Last week, Gunn made a surprise announcement that his “Superman” follow-up, “Man of Tomorrow,” would be heading to theaters in July 9, 2027, as it looks like a potential team-up between Clark and Lex Luthor (donning his iconic Warsuit) with the inclusion of The Justice Gang (Milly Alcock‘s Supergirl expected to be among their ranks in the sequel). Plenty of places that Gunn could find for Alan Ritchson to squeeze in, but fans will have to rely on their patience, as we don’t know when/where that’ll happen.
He’s also got comedic chops, as utilized by Guy Ritchie in his WWII action-comedy “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and “Titans,” so maybe he’ll be considered for something like the gestating “Booster Gold” series, which could use a hulking actor that can wisecrack.
