Despite the diminishing ratings of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and its spin-offs, zombies are still pretty popular on TV. So, Syfy is ready to get in the zombie game and the network is using some name-brand recognition to do so, as fans can expect to see “Day of the Dead” hit their TV screens next year.
According to THR, Syfy has given a straight-to-series order for a drama series titled “Day of the Dead,” inspired by the film of the same name from legendary horror genius George Romero. However, by the sound of the plot, fans shouldn’t expect to see Bub anytime soon. The report claims that “Day of the Dead” will actually follow six strangers as they attempt to survive the first 24 hours of a zombie apocalypse.
Fans of Romero’s zombie films will quickly notice the difference between that plot and the one found in his 1985 film of the same name. The film tells the story of humans attempting to survive a zombie plague that has already overtaken the world, where the undead outnumber the surviving humans by a huge margin. Romero’s “Day of the Dead” starts to look at what might happen to humans and zombies after the apocalypse has long since happened, with some trying to study the undead and figure out ways of “training” them like you would a pet.

Perhaps, if Syfy’s version of the story continues for multiple seasons, the plot will catch up to what Romero had put in his film. But, as it stands now, “Day of the Dead” shares a lot more DNA with “Night of the Living Dead” than it does the third film in the Romero series.
The 10-episode horror drama is created and written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas. Believe it or not, Elinoff and Thomas are the co-creators of the kids series “Raven’s Home.” So, it’s probably not a good idea to go back and watch that series to see how they may handle a zombie drama. As mentioned, “Day of the Dead” is expected to arrive on Syfy in 2021.
