And so the slow build campaign for Paul Thomas Anderson's highly anticipated "The Master" continues. After some footage screened for press in Cannes, and two teaser trailers, a poster has now arrived. And it adds a bit of mystery to the film.
Showing a half submerged wine bottle, it touches upon a couple aspects about the film that aren't immediately apparent. The first is that — at least in the draft we read that leaked in 2010 — Joaquin Phoenix's Freddie Sutton is described as an alcoholic, and that's likely still the case. Secondly, in the most recent trailer, there is a brief scene of Amy Adams' character telling Freddie that he inspires Philip Seymour Hoffman's Lancaster Dodd. That scene is taking place on a large boat — where, again, in that previous draft, a good portion of the story takes place — and is important to those looking at Scientology parallels, as L. Ron Hubbard himself allegedly lived on Panamanian ship for nearly four years. So water and alcohol together…coincidence? We think not.
With an October 12th release date looming, hopefully another trailer of some kind — or perhaps some official stills — are on the way. Until then, check out the full one sheet below. [Moviefone]
