Regal Website Shows 'Tenet' For September 4 Release Date

Did you think there wouldn’t be more news about “Tenet” since Warner Bros. took it off its release schedule? Think again. The latest news in the long and increasingly convoluted drama of whether Christopher Nolan‘s latest blockbuster will be released in cinemas next year fuels speculation. The website for Regal Cinemas shows “Tenet” as having a September 4 release date.

Last we’d heard, Warner Bros. was reaching out to international exhibitors to try and figure out a way to release “Tenet” overseas in late August, with a U.S. release scheduled for a later date. Though we haven’t seen confirmation from European exhibitors regarding a release date, the Regal Cinemas’ website offers some answers in the form of a U.S. release date for early September.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Warner Bros. has decided to release “Tenet” in September. It also could be nothing more than a placeholder, but it is worth noting the date as being around the reported release window planned for the film. A stateside release in September could align with the reports that “Tenet” will be released wherever cinemas are still open, and then delay the release in territories still under lockdown until they get the situation under control.

Releasing the film this year, whether in September or earlier, would certainly please Christopher Nolan, who continues to speak of himself as the champion of small cinema businesses. It would also make theaters happy, given that AMC is delaying the re-opening of its cinemas until blockbusters like “Tenet” and “Mulan” open. Likewise, the managing director of France’s second-biggest multiplex chain said recently that further delays to “Tenet” and “Mulan” would be catastrophic for international exhibitors.

Whether we’ll finally see “Tenet” this fall remains to be as big a mystery as the plot of the film itself.
