After a year with near-total silence, this month has seen not one, but two new developments in Terrence Malick‘s latest film, which is now reportedly getting the new title of “The Way of the Wind.”
The news comes from One Big Soul, the Malick Facebook fan site, which reports that the previous title of “The Last Planet” was actually a working title, and the actual title of the film is “The Way of the Wind.” This title is likely a reference to the Biblical passage Ecclesiastes 11:5, “As thou knowest not what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child; even so thou knowest not the work of God who doeth all.” This is a similar lesson to the one of Job which Malick already portrayed in “The Tree of Life,” which would make sense given the subject matter in “The Way of the Wind.”
As we already knew, Malick’s next film will be a biblical epic, telling the story of the life of Jesus Christ through a series of parables. The film was previously described as featuring a “highly spiritual experience” that puts a “dark genre twist” on the biblical story, which is just what you’d want from a Terrence Malick biblical story.
A movie about Jesus feels like the natural next step for Malick, whose previous film, “A Hidden Life,” already told the story of sainthood, which our reviewer said that the film would renew your faith, describing it as “the return to form that Malick’s loyal acolytes have spent most of this decade awaiting with an unshakable faith befitting the matter at hand has arrived.”
