'The Batman 2': Mattson Tomlin Brought In To Co-Write The Superhero Sequel Alongside Matt Reeves

Did you hear the news? Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson aren’t going to return for a new ‘Batman’ sequel! At least, that’s exactly what you’d think if you take a look at all the headlines on YouTube and less-than-reputable fandom blogs. Why would anyone think that especially after “The Batman” earned nearly $800 million worldwide earlier this year? Well, you see, there hasn’t been a greenlight given to a sequel, and to those who aren’t familiar with how studios operate, this means the film is deader than a doornail. However, that is far from the truth, and things are moving ahead, as planned, on “The Batman 2” with a familiar name being brought in to help Matt Reeves write the new script.

According to THR, Mattson Tomlin has been brought in to help craft the script for “The Batman 2,” working alongside filmmaker Matt Reeves to write the film. Tomlin is a familiar name because he was brought in during the development of “The Batman” to help craft that story, but ultimately, his name didn’t make the final credits. Now, it appears Tomlin is going to be instrumental in writing the new script.

It’s unclear where the story for “The Batman 2” is going to go. Will it include the Joker, played by Barry Keoghan in a cameo in the first film? Perhaps there’s another villain Reeves and Tomlin are hoping to bring in? We’ll find out eventually. But at least fans can rest assured knowing that there is no trouble in the realm of “The Batman” and things are moving exactly as planned.

In addition to his uncredited work on “The Batman,” Tomlin has written the Netflix action film, “Project Power,” as well as writing and directing the sci-fi film, “Mother/Android.” He’s also currently working on adapting Keanu Reeves’ comic book story, “BRZRKR,” as a feature.

Back to the aforementioned rumors, fans were starting to worry that there was more to the story of no greenlight for a sequel. Unfortunately, a lot of those fans are unaware that studios don’t just greenlight films without scripts and a clear, expected budget for the production. And with the hiring of Tomlin, the script is now being written for “The Batman 2,” which means that an official greenlight is likely to come soon enough. Many just assumed that Warner Bros. Discovery would immediately “greenlight” a sequel after the opening of “The Batman” back in early 2022. But that’s just not how things are done.

All that to say, Reeves has never been a filmmaker who rushes into productions. He takes his time to make sure things are right. And that’s not going to change with “The Batman” franchise.
