It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that a film with a very small budget that earns over $160 million worldwide is going to get a sequel. But hey, if there was any question that Scott Derrickson’s “The Black Phone” would get a sequel, then rest assured it’s happening and we now know more details.
According to Deadline, Blumhouse is set to produce “The Black Phone 2,” the sequel to the hugely successful (and really fucking good) horror film from director Scott Derrickson. While we don’t really know the plot of the film, the good news is that everyone who made the first film great is coming back for round 2. That includes, of course, Derrickson’s writing partner, C. Robert Cargill. Interestingly, Derrickson is only named as a co-writer and producer in the report, so it’s unclear if he will also direct or if another filmmaker will be brought aboard.
The key cast from the first film is also returning for the second film. That includes Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora. Obviously, the addition of Hawke is really the big news here. He is so fucking good as the baddie in the first film, complete with a really unique, modular mask that he puts to creepy, great use. The first film followed the story of a young boy who is abducted by a lunatic who traps him in the basement where there’s a mattress and a black phone. The young boy then starts to get phone calls from the kidnapper’s previous victims.
As mentioned, the first film earned a ton of money at the box office, as well as really solid reviews. Blumhouse is clearly in the money-making business, so it’s absolutely no surprise the studio would want to get “The Black Phone” franchise going again. Blumhouse has previously done this sort of thing with Derrickson with the filmmaker’s “Sinister” franchise.
In addition to the casting news, we also know Blumhouse is hoping to release “The Black Phone 2” on June 27, 2025.
