Obviously, it takes years for feature films to get developed, written, filmed, and then released. And though artificial intelligence has been a topic of sci-fi films for years, it feels like there is no better time than now to release a film about rogue A.I. taking over the world and enslaving humanity. So, you have to imagine filmmaker Gareth Edwards is pretty damn excited to be releasing “The Creator” this year.

As seen in the new trailer for “The Creator,” the film follows the story of a human soldier who is tasked with infiltrating the base of the A.I. who have taken over the world and stealing their secret weapon which could end humanity for good. However, that plan is further complicated when the soldier realizes the secret weapon is just a little kid. Well, a little kid robot. So, his mission gets muddied, and decisions have to be made.
“The Creator” stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney. As mentioned, the film is directed by Gareth Edwards, the filmmaker behind the 2016 film, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” In fact, “The Creator” marks the first feature from Edwards since that Lucasfilm project. Considering there was a lot of behind-the-scenes drama surrounding ‘Rogue One,’ it’ll be interesting to see how people embrace “The Creator.”

Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.
