Though the SAG and WGA strikes are seemingly going strong without much of an end in sight, that doesn’t mean all of Hollywood has come to a halt. There are still films being produced thanks to interim agreements, which allow independent studios to continue to film as long as they agree to the demands made by SAG. This means Andre Gaines is set to begin production on his newest film, “The Dutchman.”
According to Deadline, Andre Gaines is set to direct “The Dutchman,” a film based on the acclaimed stage play from playwright Amiri Baraka. Leading the cast are André Holland, Kate Mara, Zazie Beetz, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. Co-written by Gaines and Qasim Basir, “The Dutchman” tells the story of a white woman and a Black man on a subway car in New York City, as they play a seemingly harmless game of cat and mouse that soon devolves into something darker. The original play was produced in the mid-‘60s and dealt with the then-current state of the Civil Rights movement in America.
“This is a story that was near and dear to me, as I like to tell stories about historic times, places, people,” said Gaines. “I did that with my film ‘The One and Only Dick Gregory;’ I also did that with a film called ‘After Jackie’ and really wanted to elevate this story to bring it to new audiences and broaden its scope.”
Holland is one of the best actors working today, appearing in films such as “Moonlight,” “Selma,” and “42.” Most recently, he’s been seen in films “Bones & All” and “Passing.” Mara has recently been seen in the FX drama series, “Class of ‘09,” as well as the Netflix series, “Black Mirror.” She also had a role in the acclaimed film, “Call Jane.”
Even though production is set to begin next week, it’s unclear when we might see “The Dutchman” arrive in theaters. The SAG strike does allow for filming to commence, but securing distribution and whatnot would likely still require some sort of agreement between the union and the studios. Even still, it’s highly unlikely we see “The Dutchman” before the second half of 2024.
