'The Grinch' Trailer Shows Not Much Has Changed In The Christmas Tale

Bah humbug. It might only be March, that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking about Christmas. Or, at least start plotting on how to ruin Christmas if you’re like the Grinch. The beloved Dr. Seuss character is back and ready for more Christmas-thwarting shenanigans in the first trailer for  “The Grinch.”

Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh. Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, Cindy-Lou Who-a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer-plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother. As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheme threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one. Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus? Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all?

They might not be Pixar, but Illumination Entertainment has certainly established themselves as a force to be reckoned in the animation world. Since breaking out with “Despicable Me” back in 2010, their films have continually scored well over $100 million at the box office. In fact, two of their films have are billion (you read that right, BILLION) dollar earners that both come from the Despicable Me franchise. The studio’s standalone “Minions” took in $1.16 billion and last year’s “Despicable Me 3” earned $1.03 billion. In addition, their seven fully animated films have received consistently positive reviews (2011’s “Hop” remains the one critical dark spot).

So far, the only cast announced has been Benedict Cumberbatch who will be lending his voice as the titular Grinch. The film is co-directed by Scott Mosier in his feature-length directorial debut and “Secret Life of Pets” co-director Yarrow Cheney.
