‘The Last Photograph’ Teaser: Zack Snyder Returns With An Intimate, Surreal Jungle Thriller

Stuart Martin and Fra Fee lead the filmmaker’s long-gestating passion project, with a full trailer promised soon.

After spending much of the past decade immersed in superheroes, zombies, and sprawling sci-fi worlds, Zack Snyder is scaling down considerably for “The Last Photograph,” a long-gestating passion project that looks markedly different from his recent work.

Snyder unveiled the film’s brief and intensely atmospheric first teaser today, offering flashes of jungle terrain, violence, grief, and increasingly surreal imagery. “The Last Photograph… Full trailer coming soon,” the filmmaker wrote in sharing the footage.

Stuart Martin stars as Ethan Black, a former DEA operative who returns to the mountains of South America after his diplomat brother and sister-in-law are brutally murdered and their children disappear. His search for his missing niece and nephew brings him together with a troubled war photographer—the only person who saw the killers’ faces.

As the two men travel further from civilization, they are forced to confront their respective pasts while the distinction between reality and the surreal begins to erode. Fra Fee, Jackie Kay, Sergio Herrera, Marlon Moreno, Costanza Andrade, Ed Hughes, Carolina Henao, and Gustavo Angarita Jr. round out the cast.

Snyder directs from a screenplay by Kurt Johnstad (“300,” “Rebel Moon”), based on an original story by the filmmaker. Snyder also served as cinematographer and produced alongside Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, and Gianni Nunnari. Hans Zimmer, Omer Benyamin, and Steven Doar composed the score.

The project has been gestating in various forms for roughly two decades, with Christian Bale and Sean Penn previously attached to an earlier incarnation. Snyder finally revived it following his two-part “Rebel Moon” undertaking and shot the independent production in Colombia, Iceland, and Los Angeles.

“The idea of taking a camera in hand and simply intimately making a movie is very appealing to me,” Snyder previously said, describing the film as “a meditation on life and death” informed by trials from his own life.
