‘The Meg 2: The Trench’ Trailer: Ben Wheatley Directs Jason Statham In The Underwater Monster Sequel

Ben Wheatley is one of the most interesting filmmakers working today. His projects always are unique and worth a watch. Sure, there are slight missteps, such as with “Rebecca,” but that doesn’t take away from films such as “Sightseers,” “High-Rise,” and “Kill List.” All that to say, it’s really quite surprising that his next film is “The Meg 2: The Trench.” This seems like a big departure for someone who could be seen as an auteur, right?

Well, as seen in the trailer, “The Meg 2: The Trench” seems to pick up where the first one left off. There’s a massive megalodon out to kill people and Jason Statham is back to stop it. Based on the novel, “The Trench” by Steven Alten, the sequel film features a brand-new monster for the heroes to combat, with the addition of the kronosaurus. And if you’re wondering, yes, there’s a third book in the ‘Meg’ novel series, so if the sequel film does well (and it probably will), then we can fully expect more of these movies to come in the future.

The sequel stars Jason Statham, Wu Jing, Sienna Guillory, Cliff Curtis, Skyler Samuels, Page Kennedy, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Sergio Peris-Mencheta. As mentioned, Ben Wheatley is behind the camera as the director. In addition to booking “The Meg 2,” Wheatley was also attached to the “Tomb Raider” sequel film that was to star Alicia Vikander. Unfortunately, that franchise has gone through yet another reboot and the sequel fell apart. His most recent film was the 2021 pandemic-filmed feature, “In the Earth.”
