Apple, much like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon, is banking big on the idea that big stars will drive streaming subscribers. And out of all the new series coming to the as-yet-unreleased streaming service, Apple TV+, “The Morning Show” seems poised to be the early crown jewel in the tech company’s streaming plan. And you can see why in the new teaser.
While not an adaptation, the new series apparently pulls some inspiration from CNN correspondent Brian Stelter’s 2013 book “Top of the Morning,” which talked about the morning show war between NBC’s “Today Show” and ABC’s “Good Morning America.” And while we don’t see any real footage from the series, it’s clear that “The Morning Show” is attempting to give a dramatic look behind the scenes at a fictional show in the same vein as the aforementioned TV staples.
But really, it’s not the story that is going to entice folks to watch the brand-new Apple TV+ series. The real selling point is the cast, which is led by Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Carell. Those three actors have cemented their status as A-listers in the world of film, but have all had strong runs on TV series, as well.
Aniston, of course, was one of the stars of “Friends.” You may have heard about it. Carell led the way on the first several seasons of “The Office.” And if you’re under the age of 30, you probably worship at the altar of that series. And finally, Witherspoon recently starred in the two seasons of “Big Little Lies,” which was a massive hit for HBO. Needless to say, the TV clout carried by these stars is unlike many other casts.
“The Morning Show” already has a two-season pickup, with the first of the 10-episode seasons premiering sometime this fall.
