It’s been a while since writer-producer Ryan Murphy signed a massive exclusive deal with Netflix. And now, months later, the streaming service is finally going to see the first fruits of their union with the release of the series “The Politician.”
And as you can see in the first look images from the upcoming series, Murphy has enlisted quite the cast to bring “The Politician” to life. The series, in the simplest description, is a story about the lengths that people will go to keep their status among the wealthy and elite. As Murphy tells THR, “The Politician” is actually a product of the time, specifically in light of the new Trump era of politics.
“It’s wealthy people behaving badly,” he says. “All of this has been percolating in the culture, particularly under this president and this idea of Ivanka and Jared [as] the sort of satanic poster boy and girl for privilege and nepotism.”
The first images show actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, and Zoey Deutch as their respective characters on the show.
“Brad always says I have this very specific warmth as a mother, so I think he took that and transposed it to this character and the son that she loves,” said Paltrow. “And I think it’s sort of hilarious that she doesn’t like the other two.”
“I think people will find a lot of enjoyment in looking beneath that surface-level glamour to explore the darker side of power and money,” said Zoey Deutch about the series.
Joining Paltrow, Lange, and Deutch in the series are actors Ben Platt, Rahne Jones, Lucy Boynton, Theo Germaine, Julia Schlaepfer, David Corenswet, and Laura Dreyfuss.
“The Politician” will debut on Netflix later this year, but Murphy and the cast are already planning on beginning work on Season 2 in October.
