Got a Tip?

‘The Power of the Dog’ Takes Best Film At 2022 BAFTA Awards

A weekend of multiple awards ceremonies meant a number of no-shows at the 2022 BAFTA Film Awards, but that didn’t diminish the star power across the pond. Lady Gaga, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston and Emma Watson, among others, brought the paps to the BAFTA’s red carpet and, the BAFTA voters? Well, overall they spread the love, but Jane Campion and “The Power of the Dog” came out decidedly on top.

After winning the DGA Award last night, the Australian filmmakers duplicated with the same honor from her (mostly) U.K. voting peers. The Netflix release also took Best Film over “Belfast” which won Best British Film.

There was much less overlap between BAFTA and the Academy Awards this year in the acting nominations. That being said, Oscar frontrunner and “West Side Story” star Ariana DeBose followed up her SAG Award win with a BAFTA for Supporting Actress while “CODA’s” Troy Kotsur did the same in Supporting Actor. Will Smith also looks likely to win his first Oscar after taking Best Actor at BAFTA for “King Richard.”

Best Actress went to veteran British Actress Joanna Scanlan for “After Love.”

Dune” took five below the line honors including Original Score (Hans Zimmer), Cinematography (Greig Fraser), Production Design, Sound and Visual Effects. The makeup and hair team behind “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” won their first BAFTA in that category while “West Side Story”(Cindy Tolan) took the Casting honor. In one of the most expected wins of the night, Jenny Beavan took Costume Design for “Cruella.” On the other hand, Siân Heder taking Adapted Screenplay for “CODA” and Paul Thomas Anderson winning Original Screenplay for “Licorice Pizza” were two minor surprises.

Film Not in the English Language and Documentary went to two Oscar favorites, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car” and AhmirQuestlove” Thompson’s Summer of Soul,” respectively. “Encanto” took Animated Film.

Jeymes Samuel took the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for “The Harder They Fall.”

In a vote determined by public voting, Lashana Lynch, of “No Time To Die,” won the EE Rising Star Award (or pretty much already established star based on the nominees).
