In the dark comedy series, Winslet stars as Elena Verham, the Chancellor of an autocratic regime in decline, determined to hold onto power as her country collapses around her. Will she beat the clock ticking against her thanks to Schoenaert’s soldier-confidant Herbert Zubak, or does Zubak have plans of his own?
Here’s an official synopsis for “The Regime,” courtesy of HBO:
The darkly comedic six-episode series tells the story of life within the walls of a modern authoritarian regime as it begins to unravel. After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham has grown increasingly paranoid and unstable when she turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak, as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor continues to grow, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in both the palace and the country fracturing around her.
Along with Winslet and Schoenaert, “The Regime” also stars Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant. Frears shares directing duties on the series with Jessica Hobbs. Writers on “The Regime” include Seth Reiss, Sarah DeLappe, Gary Shteyngart, Jen Spyra, and Juli Weiner. Will Tracy serves as showrunner and writer, and he also executive produces with Frank Rich, Tracey Seaward, Winslet, Frears, and Hobbs.
“The Regime” premieres on HBO and Max on Sunday, March 3, and if Winslet’s history with the network is any indication, this show will be a winner. Watch a trailer for the upcoming series below.
