Bill Hader is headed back behind the camera for the first time since his hit HBO show “Barry.” Deadline reports that the multi-hyphenate will direct, write, and star in “They Know,” a new horror film from MRC, the studio behind “Wuthering Heights,” “Knives Out” and “Snack Shack,” among others. Is this Hader’s infamous horror script a producer slammed as “mean-spirited”? Wait for confirmation on that.
Hader stars in “They Know” as a divorced dad who grows suspicious that his ex-wife is secretly dating a man who has a strange influence on their children. A vague set-up, but given the genre, this one could get any number of ways. In any case, expect Hader’s droll sense of humor to be a highlight here.
The script for “They Know” comes from an original story ideaby Hader and his “Barry” collaborator Duffy Boudreau. Hader also produces the pic with Bob Graf via his Hanarply banner; Alyssa Donavan co-produces. Hader plans to shoot the project in LA this Spring, so expect a 2027 release.
It will be a tall order for “They Know” to match the success of “Barry.” Hader’s HBO series was a critical darling, nabbing multiple Emmys and Critics’ Choice Awards during its run, as well as three DGAs. Of course, the “SNL” alum had success before “Barry,” albeit not behind the camera. Other noteworthy work for Hader includes “Superbad,” “Tropic Thunder,” “Trainwreck,” and “The Skeleton Twins.” His next onscreen projects is “The Cat In The Hat,” in theaters on November 6.
Who will join Hader on “They Know”? With its Spring production date, expect some updates on that front soon.
