Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda already has two films on the way in 2026, “Sheep In The Box” and “Look Back,” and don’t be surprised if the former bows at Cannes in May. That’s already great news, but now Deadline has more: Kore-eda has another project, a new English-language film, lined up at Searchlight, along with its leading man.

Eddie Redmayne will join forces with the Japanese auteur on the still-untitled project, and also produce the film with Jonathan King and Ash Sarohia. Executive producers on the pic include Joyce Jun and Kaoru Matsuzaki. There’s no word on plot details yet, from a script Kore-eda write, but look for production on the project to start later this year, with a 2027 festival world premiere.
Redmayne’s onscreen work has been minimal the past few years, with Peacock/Sky‘s “The Day Of The Jackal” his most recent project. That show scored high marks and viewership numbers, as well as Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics Choice nods for the actor, with a second season. It’s worth noting that Redmayne also produced the show, as well as his latest theater effort, “Cabaret,” so he’s making smart choices about what projects he gets involved in. In that sense, this team-up with Kore-eda becomes more intriguing. Other upcoming work for Redmayne includes “Panic Carefully” with Julia Roberts, which hits theaters in late 2026 courtesy of Warner Bros.
As for Kore-eda, US audiences know him best for “Shoplifters,” his 2018 film that won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival that year; the movie also received an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film. But Kore-eda’s filmography has plenty of other critically regarded films, including most recently 2023’s “Monster, 2022’s “Broker,” and 2019’s “The Truth,” his English-language debut. Other recent work for the director includes the Netflix series “The Makanai.”
Stay tuned for more details on Kore-eda’s next film as they arrive.
