Marvel Studios Ditching Taika Waititi's Version Of Thor For 'Avengers: Infinity War'

Thor: Ragnarok” fans, we have some good news and some bad news.

The bad news is that the version of Thor seen in ‘Ragnarok’ won’t be seen in “Avengers: Infinity War.” So don’t go into the theater expecting the Taika Waititi-infused Thunder God that you know and love from the last film. According to Chris Hemsworth, that’s not the version of Thor we’re going to see in the upcoming superhero epic film. But the good news is, it’s all for a good reason, and don’t worry, they’re not reverting to the Shakespeare-lite version that was in his previous incarnations, either.

“I came into this and called Joe and Anthony [Russo] and said, ‘Look, don’t write me the old Thor, we’ve got a new Thor now. I was like ‘no, no, no’ and I was really protective of what I’d created with Taika,” Hemsworth said. “[The Russos] said, ‘No this is a whole different thing; Thor’s never faced something like this, never been a part of this large an ensemble’.”

Honestly, after hearing that explanation, a Taika Waititi Thor wouldn’t really work facing Thanos. Sure, it would be funny, but ultimately, it would turn this massive film into a bit of a joke. And judging by the footage seen, while there are jokes, ‘Infinity War’ is definitely going for a more serious vibe than ‘Ragnarok.’

Hemsworth also talked about why he’s happier working on ‘Infinity War’ than with previous ‘Avengers’ films. With Thor’s previous characterization, the actor felt “stuck.” He says, “I felt stuck about what I was giving there and felt like I probably wasn’t bringing my portion to it as much as I could have.” That sounds about right, considering Thor is more of an afterthought in previous ‘Avengers’ films.

The word coming from the cast and crew of ‘Infinity War’ seems incredibly positive, so hopefully, that translates to a good film.

And as we approach the release of ‘Infinity War,’ we are finally getting the onslaught of marketing materials including this new TV spot, with new footage. We didn’t know until just now that teenage, sassy Groot is the best idea in MCU history.
