‘Thunderbolts*’ Super Bowl Spot: Sentry Gets Teased As The Big Bad In Marvel’s Ragtag Super-Soldier Team

With the Super Bowl in full swing this weekend, it was a prime opportunity for Marvel Studios and Disney to remind audiences of the beloved sporting event that the next big release of “Thunderbolts” isn’t too far away from gracing the big screen with a brand new TV spot, which you can watch below.

The pic helmed by Jake Schreier (“Beef,” “Skeleton Crew”) is a hodgepodge of elements from “Captain America” franchise, “Black Widow,” and “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier” for the new team-up film. Although, there seems to be more of a comedic tone than we usually see in these MCU films, taking cues from military/spy thrillers.

One of the biggest draws is going to be the fantastic cast assembled for “Thunderbolts,” which includes David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the cloak-and-dagger director of the CIA that puts the group together, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Geraldine Viswanathan, Lewis Pullman as Bob (assumed to be a version of Sentry), Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, who has all but taken over the Black Widow mantle from Scarlett Johansson (pending a brief return in the next two Multiverse-centric installments of the “Avengers”).

Funny enough, “Thunderbolts” first started at Marvel as a wishlist idea James Gunn (“Guardians of The Galaxy”) tried to get going at the studio before moving on to “The Suicide Squad” and “Creature Commandos” (two DC Comics’ super-teams made up of villains and anti-heroes, striking a similar tone).

It’s still unclear if “Thunderbolts” is a real franchise starter or simply planting seeds for (Dark/New Avengers?) what’s to come in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” as the assumption is plenty of these characters (now managed by President Thunderbolt Ross’ government ala “Captain America: Brave New World”) will be announced for those movies, eventually.
