When fashion designer Tom Ford arrived in 2009 with “A Single Man,” he proved his creative talents extended far beyond clothing, and his debut feature film made it clear it was made by someone with a firm grasp on cinematic language. Still, it was a bit surprising when, at the time, he said his next movie would be a comedy. Seven years have passed, and Ford has finally returned with his latest, “Nocturnal Animals,” a slinky domestic drama and crime story that has some humorous moments (Michael Sheen and Andrea Riseborough as scene stealers early on, and Michael Shannon‘s gallows touch to his performance), but it’s certainly not a laugh fest. But as it turns out, Ford did write the comedy, but it seems the material is risqué.
“I did write a comedy. I have that comedy. Everyone who has read it says it’s so inappropriate that it really couldn’t be made,” he told Vulture. “Even the title is inappropriate!”

That’s all Ford will say about his movie, but that just makes us want to hear more about it. Regardless, he’s already moving ahead onto something else, teasing his next project, but again remaining cryptic.
“Anyway, there’s another book I’ve identified that my agents are trying to get the rights to, and if they do, that would probably come first. It’s not going to be another seven years, though. I don’t know where the last seven years went! I opened all these doors … I had a child, that’s where a lot of it went. I wanted to be a hands-on father, which I am,” he said.
So something to think about, but first, “Nocturnal Animals” is coming to cinemas, and you can see it on the big screen starting this Friday.
