Is a sequel to “Spider-Man: No Way Home” imminent? Not according to Tom Holland, reports Deadline. And that’s because writers haven’t written a decent enough story idea to greenlight another movie.
Holland discussed a possible sequel to Sony‘s 2021 smash hit at a press conference with the Critics Choice Association yesterday. “All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” said the actor. “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing.” That makes sense, considering how “No Way Home” ended. But another “Spider-Man” movie with Holland is all but assured after its box office success. Jon Watts‘ film made $1.922 billion worldwide, the highest-grossing movie of 2021.
Still, Holland wants to avoid jumping the gun on a sequel’s development. “I feel very protective over Spider-Man,” he continued. “I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”
Even though a sequel to “No Way Home” hasn’t been officially announced, many speculate Sony and Marvel Studios have it in their pipeline. Part of that is due to Marvel head Kevin Feige confirming that writers were working on a script for “Spider-Man 4” in February. And then in June, Sony/Marvel reserved two release dates for upcoming films in June: November 8, 2024 and June 25, 2025. Kelly Marcel‘s “Venom 3” now fills the November slot next year, but what Sony/Marvel have in mind for June 2025 remains unknown. Of course, Sony has multiple projects in development in their Spidey-verse, but it’s wise of fans to hope “Spider-Man 4” arrives before another wonky spin-off like “Morbius” or the upcoming “Madame Web.”
And Holland sounds like he shares fans’ hope for another “Spider-Man” movie. “If we can figure that out, I would be a fool not to put the suit back on again because I owe everything to Spider-Man,” Holland said. “I love the character and the people I get to work with. So, I would love to tell another story, but I’ll only tell it if we can find the right one.”
Kevin Feige & co. would be foolish if they didn’t make another “Spider-Man” film with Holland. But with all of the creative overhauls at Marvel Studios at the moment, who knows what will happen? And with Holland now 27, he’ll age out of the role in a few years. So writers better catch lightning in a bottle soon or “Spider-Man 4” may ultimately be a no-go for Sony, Marvel, and Holland.
