The Russo Brothers were so impressed with Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in their “Captain America: Civil War” film (and ‘Infinity War,’ and ‘Endgame’) they immediatey decided to tap his talents for their first directorial effort outside Marvel. So, As the star of their ApplteTV+ crime drama “Cherry,” Holland is doing all the press rounds and really gunning for that Oscar. The actor caught up with Collider and was able to speak about the film ,and in the process, devliered some unexpected “Spider-Man“ Sony/Marvel news.
The outlet asked Holland about his contract with his already-extended Marvel Studios, potentially probing if he was going to be making more films beyond “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” However, despite the assumption, from news last year, that there was at least one more Marvel event film left on Holland’s contract, the actor said that wasn’t the case.

“[“Spider-Man 3″] would be my last one [under contract] so I’ve always said to them if they want me back I’ll be there in a heartbeat,” Holland said. “I’ve loved every minute of being a part of this amazing world. It’s changed my life for the better, I’m so lucky to be here. If they want me back I’ll be there, if they don’t I will walk off into the sunset a very, very happy person because it’s been an amazing journey.”
This certainly raises a lot of questions about ‘No Way Home,’ as many had already speculated that the film could be a way, using the multiverse of course, to send Holland into Sony‘s Spider-Verse and out of the MCU. Originally, in summer 2019, when the news of a newly brokered deal was announced, following months of Marvel and Sony seemingly fighting over the terms of their deal, it was said Holland would appear in two more films, one being ‘Spider-Man 3,’ aka ‘No Way Home,’ and another, an unnamed film for Disney/Marvel Studios (presumably, another ‘Avengers’-level event movies).
Regardless, Holland also added, “The way I understand it is that agreement between the two studios has already happened. I don’t think that they’re going to run into the same troubles that they did as we were going into… was it ‘Spider-Man 2’? ‘Far From Home’ had come out and then the whole thing happened between Sony and Marvel. I think the two studios have worked that out, and I don’t think that that will be a problem in the future. That said, I’m just the actor and I was a part of a few phone calls during that process, but I think they love working with each other, I think they found a way in which it can be beneficial for both studios, and I’m just kind of like a kid in the middle of it, between two parents during an argument (laughs).”
Of course, this doesn’t mean that Tom is finished playing the role as new or extended deals can be made in the future. It’s just slightly confusing to everyone because of the aforementioned reasons. “As part of the arrangement, Spider-Man will also appear in one future Marvel Studios film,” was the wording from the trades at the time.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is still filming Atlanta with director Jon Watts behind the camera before eventually moving on to Marvel’s “Fantastic Four” reboot has his next project as announced back in December at the Disney Investors Day presentation. The superhero sequel currently has a holiday release date set for December 17, 2021.
