The brief synopsis is: Pete “Maverick” Mitchell mentors a new generation of US Navy fighter pilot.

“Top Gun: Maverick” was set to be released on July 12, 2019, but was set back due to intense post-production special effects editing. In a Collider interview, cast member Jon Hamm revealed the sophisticated tech of the film: “I’ve seen some of the footage, it is out of this world…They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen. We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”

According to the director, the action sequel will consider the modern state of the Navy and of modern warfare. How has the geopolitical sphere shifted since 1986? How do the older officers (Maverick and Iceman) wield their experience in the force and how do they have to adapt? These questions will set the pace not only for the film’s important character development but also for its political and cultural commentaries. Though they may be otherwise disdained (or at best tolerated), sequels of considerably-dated originals offer an interesting opportunity to reflect on our changing country and its scape of values and institutions. Let us know if you’re eager to see how “Top Gun: Maverick” will stand up to the world over 30 years later.
