Man, this sounds bad. Perhaps hoping to ride off the buzz from Sony's “21 Jump Street,” New Line Cinema is moving forward with the “Police Academy” reboot everyone’s been waiting for. We were nervous nearly two years ago when the project bubbled up, but now the studio has some talent attached—namely, first-time feature helmer Scott Zabielski, producer and director of Daniel Tosh’s unfunny half-hour Comedy Central series “Tosh.0.”
It gets better. Zabielski is apparently qualified to direct the film in part because according to Deadline he “went through the [police] academy and is a reserve police officer in West Hollywood.” That sort of logic seems to be working out for the “active Navy Seals” in the "Act of Valor" trailer, which contains acting so wooden, it would embarrass Paul Walker. Real-life experience, while valuable, is not a replacement for talent.
Beginning in 1984, the original "Police Academy" film spawned six sequels. When the franchise reboot was announced in March 2010, series producer Paul Maslansky said, “It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV. It's going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians.”
Given the Tosh-connection, it wouldn’t be surprising if the film ended up being a star vehicle for Daniel Tosh. Hell, we could imagine Steve Guttenberg making a cameo. One actor who will definitely not be showing up for duty? Bobcat Goldthwait.
