The trailer for the new film by Oliver Assayas’ beau, Mia Hansen-Love, has hit the web. “The Father of My Children” garnered some pretty positive reviews around its Cannes 2009 premiere, while also winning the jury prize in “Un Certain Regard.” We caught it at LFF and loved it. However, talk of the film has settled down and it had become nearly forgotten until the trailer arrived. The film follows Gregoire (Louis-do De Lencquesaing, who had a bit part in “Cache” as the bookshop owner), a film producer struggling with his family and the ever increasing budget on his film.
Though the trailer makes it almost seem light-hearted, the actual film is rather depressing. Because of the structure of the film, it’s very difficult to speak too in depth about it without spoiling anything. For those who want a little more information, check out our review, but we implore you to go into the film without knowing too much about it. It is based on art film-producer Humbert Balsan, who produced Lars von Trier’s “Manderlay” and Claire Denis’ “The Intruder.” Directer Hansen-Love was a writer for famous French film publication Cashiers du Cinema, with a feature already under her belt titled “All is Forgiven” which won numerous awards and was nominated for a Cesar award in France. She is becoming one to keep an eye on, and her next film, “Un amour de jeunesse” has a 2011 release date and it is likely to premiere at the Cannes 2011 festival.
“The Father of My Children” debuts in NYC on May 28th and IFC will include it on their “IFC in Theaters” on-Demand platform, so those not in NY will be able to check it out, which we highly recommend doing.
