‘Splinter Cell: Deathwatch’ Trailer: Netflix’s Video Game Animated Series From ‘John Wick’ Creator Launches October 14

Video game adaptations are quickly getting almost as popular as superheroes, as Netflix is readying their animated series “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Deathwatch” with a new trailer shared with us today, and the show debuts next month.

Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”) stars as the voice of protagonist Sam Fisher (Tom Hardy once nearly played a live-action feature version of Fisher from Doug Liman), known for his signature nightvision goggles, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste is set to voice Zinnia Mckenna, with a creative team that features writer Derek Kolstad (creator of the “John Wick” franchise) alongside directors Guillaume Dousse and Félicien Colmet-Daage.

“Splinter Cell” is one of the more popular military sneaker video games (“Metal Gear Solid” pioneering the genre in the 1990s), first making the scene in 2002. There would be five more installments with “Pandora Tomorrow,” “Chaos Theory,” “Double Agent,” “Conviction,” and the very popular “Blacklist.”

An official synopsis for “Splinter Cell: Deathwatch” via Netflix:

In this first-ever adaptation of the acclaimed stealth video game franchise Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, legendary agent Sam Fisher is drawn back into the field when a wounded young operative seeks out his help.

Of course, other video games tied to the Clancy (creator of the “Jack Ryan” franchise) estate include “Rainbow Six,” “Ghost Recon,” and the post-pandemic survival shooter “The Division.” The latter nearly became a feature film at Netflix from action director David Leitch (“Deadpool 2,” “Bullet Train”) with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain attached to star, but given the events of COVID-19, you could understand why the streamer got cold feet and decided against pushing forward with the adaptation.

“Splinter Cell: Deathwatch” is produced by game studio Ubisoft, in partnership with Kolstad, Sun Creature, and Fost. You can check out that new footage from the series trailer below, as the show is set to premiere on October 14.
