Producer Roy Lee, during the promotion of “The Long Walk,” has revealed when filmmaker Francis Lawrence is going to be directing Netflix‘s feature film adaptation of the accalimed and extremely popular video game “BioShock,” a movie that once had Gore Verbinski (“The Ring,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy) attached to direct in the past before that iteration fell apart over budgeting/creative issues.
Lee spoke with The Direct, revealing that Lawrence is expected to helm “BioShock” after he completes work on Lionsgate‘s latest “Hunger Games” prequel film, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping.” This is yet another high-profile adaptation that has taken decades to get to this point.
“Netflix wants us to keep everything under wraps. But it’s definitely going to be based on the first ‘BioShock’ game…Well, ‘The Long Walk’ became a reality because ‘BioShock’ was delayed for a little bit, where we had to do some more script work. And so as the script work is being done, we shot ‘The Long Walk,’ and he was already committed to doing the next ‘Hunger Games’ movie. And so it’s just waiting for him whenever the ‘Hunger Games’ is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now,” Lee said of the current status of “BioShock,” giving the impression it could be ready to go next.
The video game, which feels like it was directly pulled from Guillermo del Toro‘s dreamscape, focuses on a mysterious tech-heavy authoritarian society set in an underwater community that is discovered by a pilot who has all sorts of supernatural and horrific threats lurking in the dark. It’s maybe up there with “Fallout” as it has quite the ambitious production design and lore attached to it, which likely means a rather large budget will be needed to bring things to life for a live-action “BioShock” movie.
“Sunrise On The Reaping” already has an impressive cast that consists of Joseph Zada, Mckenna Grace, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Jesse Plemons, Kieran Culkin, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Wang, Whitney Peak, Lili Taylor, Glenn Close, Billy Boyd, Billy Porter, and Jefferson White. Perhaps, some of these names, including some from “The Long Walk,” will be considered for “BioShock,” as it gives Lawrence an excuse to reunite with actors he’s already worked with.
As it sounds like the script for “BioShock” is ready enough after some tweaking, the next big step would be casting the lead roles, but that likely won’t go into full swing until after Lawrence is done with the “Hunger Games” installment.
