While their NIN career is legendary, it’s almost hard to imagine a time when Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross weren’t scoring movies; their work is now so indelible. As rock musicians turned dedicated composers, they already earned themselves two Oscar awards for films as varied as David Fincher‘s “The Social Network” and Disney’s “Soul” (alongside Jon Batiste). The eclectic duo won’t be slowing down anytime soon, as they’ll be composing new scores for filmmakers Luca Guadagnino (“Challengers”) and Scott Derrickson (“Doctor Strange”) for their upcoming features.
First, they’ve revealed in a profile with GQ Magazine that they’ll be working on Derrickson’s next pic, “The Gorge,” a mysterious sci-fi thriller starring Miles Teller (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Anya Taylor-Joy (“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”), and Sigourney Weaver (“Avatar: The Way of Water”) that will be making its debut on Apple TV+ in the near future.
Another film they’re working on, revealed on the Edith Bowman podcast Soundtracking, is Guadagnino’s “Queer.” The pic is an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel with a cast that consists of Daniel Craig (“Glass Onion”), Jason Schwartzman (“Asteroid City”), and Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”).
The two shared with Bowman that they have a list of people they want to work with and that Guadagnino ticked off one of their names, “The reality is we have a secret list of people we think would be good [to work with]. Luca was on that list, and so is Sam [Mendes].” Of course, the duo previously worked with the director on his cannibal drama “Bones & All” and the new tennis relationship love-triangle film “Challengers.” It wouldn’t be all that surprising if their working relationship with Guadagnino continues, with the filmmaker lining up plenty of follow-up projects like “Separate Rooms” and the thriller “After The Hunt.”
Release dates for both “The Gorge” and “Queer” have yet to be made official, but both are expected to arrive later this year, either on the film festival circuit, in regular theaters, or both.
