After years in development hell, “Tron: Ares,” the long-awaited third installment in the “Tron” franchise, started inching closer to production earlier this year. Director Joachim Rønning signed on this January after Garth Davis left the project, and filming on the project should commence this month. So who will join Jared Leto in the “Tron: Ares” cast? Variety has the latest scoop there, and it’s Jodie Turner-Smith.
Turner-Smith joins Leto and the previously announced Evan Peters and Greta Lee for the third “Tron” film. Also reportedly on board: Steven Lisberger. No word yet on who Turner-Smith plays alongside Leto’s titular Ares, though.
“Tron: Ares” is Turner-Smith’s first real blockbuster of her career. Her breakout role came in 2017’s “Queen & Slim,” and since then, she’s starred in the likes of Kogonada‘s “After Yang,” Amazon‘s “Without Remorse,” and Noah Baumbach‘s Don Delillo adaptation “White Noise.” This year, she starred in another Netflix project, “Murder Mystery 2” with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Upcoming roles for Turner-Smith beyond “Tron: Ares” include “Star Wars: The Acolyte“ and Bill Lawrence‘s upcoming TV Drama “Bad Monkey.” Turner-Smith will also appear in the upcoming fourth season of Netflix’s “Sex Education.”
It’s taken a long time for “Tron: Ares” to reach production. Leto first signed onto star in the film in 2017 and stuck with the project through its directorial changes. Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver, and Emma Ludbrook produce the film with Leto. It’s the first “Tron” movie since 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” Joseph Kosinski‘s directorial debut, which featured Jeff Bridges reprising his role from the 1982 original. Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hetlund also starred.
