Huh? Didn’t the Wachowskis’ “Matrix” trilogy end with a whimper? Ok, maybe not a commercial one (“Revolutions” grossed $427 million worldwide, which sounds great till you hear that “Reloaded” grossed a massive $742 mil worldwide), but creatively? The third film was even more confused than the second one (man, the Architect is sort of a laugh in retrospect) and was one of the most unsatisfying conclusions to one of the most promising, game-changing sci-fi films in recent memory.
But apparently more are coming and they’re coming in 3D. Promoting his new film “Henry’s Crime,” at “the London school of performing Arts university” (which very well could be the London International School of Performing Arts), Keanu Reeves apparently dropped a huge bombshell about two more “Matrix” films.
Here’s the email from a reader that was sent in to AICN.
[Keanu] says he met the Wachowskis (no emphasis on the word brothers), for lunch over Christmas and stated that they had completed work on a two picture script treatment that would see him return to the world of the Matrix as Neo. Says the brothers have met with Jim Cameron to discuss the pro’s and con’s of 3D and are looking to deliver something which has never been seen again. Keanu stated that he still has an obligation to the fans to deliver a movie worthy of the title “The Matrix” and he swears this time that the treatment will truly revolutionize the action genre like the first movie. Wachowskis are working on a movie called “Cloud Atlas” at the moment, once that concludes they will talk again.
While it almost sounds made up, “Cloud Atlas” is a real project, likely the Wachowskis’ next (more info here) and the reader also mentions Reeves talking about the 3D samurai film, “47 Ronin” which is very much a real project as well. Reeves also noted that that recent Wachowski-penned “Robin Hood” film was sold to Warner Bros. for $5 million (and he says that’s the highest price for a screenplay ever sold, which may not exactly be true, but it’s an amazing price). “Matrix: Revolutions” did end fairly ambiguously, so there’s plenty of room to bring back Neo. More importantly, it ended really poorly and with the advent of 3D, it’s completely conceivable that the sibling directors want to get it right and end their series on a strong note.
