‘Until Dawn’ First Look Featurette: David F. Sandberg Returns To Horror With Film Based On Popular Video Game

It appears there are two ways to make a successful film adaptation of a video game. Either you make it appeal to children (“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise) or you turn it into an adult-focused TV series (“Fallout” and “The Last of Us”). The folks behind “Until Dawn” are hoping that making it a straight-up horror film will also work.

Instead of a teaser for the film, the folks behind the “Until Dawn” film adaptation just released a first look featurette about the upcoming film. It shows quite a bit of footage, but it also features interviews with the filmmaker. The film tells the story of a group of young people who find themselves stalked about a mysterious killer and forced to relive the day over and over again.

The film stars Ella Rubin, ​Michael Cimino, ​Odessa A’zion, ​Ji-young Yoo, ​Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare. “Until Dawn” is directed by David F. Sandberg. The filmmaker is probably best known for films such as “Lights Out” and the two ‘Shazam’ features.

In the featurette, Sandberg talked about the unique way he’s bringing a video game feel to this adaptation.

“One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways,” Sandberg said. “The movie has this mechanic, where things start over and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to make it until dawn.”

“Until Dawn” is expected to arrive in theaters on April 25. You can watch the first look featurette below.

Here’s the synopsis:

One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.
