Though she’s hardly a new face in films, Vanessa Kirby’s rise to A-list status seems to have happened fairly quickly. Thanks to breakout performances in films such as “Mission: Impossible—Fallout,” “Hobbs & Shaw,” “Pieces of a Woman,” and the recent “The World to Come,” Kirby has established herself as one of the biggest stars and most acclaimed actors in the world. So, she fits in perfectly with the two folks that she’ll co-star with in “The Son.”
According to Variety, Vanessa Kirby is set to star opposite Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern in the upcoming drama, “The Son,” from the Oscar-winning filmmaker Florian Zeller. “The Son” tells the story of a man (Jackman) that has to come to terms with his estranged son after his ex-wife (Dern) re-enters his life after he has already remarried his new wife (Kirby). Clearly, “The Son” requires three actors that are able to stand toe-to-toe with each other, and though she’s not as experienced as the other two, Kirby will easily be able to do so.
“Vanessa Kirby is for me a very great actress: intense, inventive, and powerful. I am especially happy to take her on this cinematic adventure,” said Zeller.
“The Son” is written and directed by Zeller, who is probably best known for his previous film, the Oscar-winning feature, “The Father.” That film, just like “The Son,” is based on a previous award-winning play from Zeller. “The Father” saw an Oscar win for Anthony Hopkins as Best Actor and Zeller himself in Best Adapted Screenplay. At the most recent Oscars, not only did Zeller’s film earn recognition, but Kirby did also for her role in the aforementioned “Pieces of a Woman.”
A release date for “The Son” has yet to be revealed, but filming is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
