Vanessa Kirby & Yahya Abdul-Mateen II To Star In Apple Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Liminal’ From Director Louis Leterrier

Apple lands another glossy high-concept genre play, with Vanessa Kirby and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II leading Louis Leterrier’s latest sci-fi action thriller.

Apple is staying deep in the big-swing sci-fi business, and its newest package comes with two strong leads and a director who knows how to move at blockbuster speed.

Vanessa Kirby (“The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” “Pieces of a Woman”) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Wonder Man,” “Candyman”) are set to star in “Liminal,” a new sci-fi action thriller for Apple that will be directed by Louis Leterrier (“Fast X,” “The Incredible Hulk”). Plot details are still under wraps, but the project has already been greenlit, suggesting this one is moving beyond the usual development limbo and into something much more concrete.

That alone makes it notable. Apple has spent the last few years building out a prestige-meets-spectacle lane on TV—one where expensive science fiction, star-driven packages, and filmmakers with commercial muscle all intersect—in shows like “Foundation,” “Silo,” “Severance,” and “Dark Matter.

“Liminal” sounds like it fits squarely inside that strategy, especially with Leterrier at the helm, a director whose work has long favored propulsion and physical immediacy—whether it was the lean, hard-charging action mechanics of “Transporter 2,” the hand-to-hand brutality of “Unleashed,” or the mythic-scale spectacle of “Clash of the Titans.”

For Vanessa Kirby, the project continues a run that’s pushed her deeper into large-scale studio filmmaking—whether through the white-knuckle action choreography of “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” and “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning,” or the historical sweep of “Napoleon.” Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, meanwhile, has built a genre résumé with real range, moving from the comic-book scale of “Aquaman” to the sleek, reality-bending weirdness of “The Matrix Resurrections” and the unnerving intensity of “Us.” Put the two together in a mystery-box sci-fi thriller, and Apple has a pairing that brings both movie-star heft and enough unpredictability to make the setup feel genuinely intriguing.

No release date has been announced yet, and there’s no word on the writer or additional cast. But as packages go, this is a pretty sleek one out of the gate: Apple, sci-fi, Leterrier, Kirby, Abdul-Mateen. Sometimes that’s enough to get your attention before even the first image ever arrives.
