A small British drama with real awards traction is making its push stateside. A new trailer has arrived for “I Swear,” the Tourette’ s-focused biographical drama from writer-director Kirk Jones (“Waking Ned Devine”), starring Robert Aramayo (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”). The film, which already broke out in the U.K.—hitting No. 1 during its theatrical run and landing among the country’s top ten films of 2025—now heads to U.S. theaters on April 24.

“I Swear” tells the story of John Davidson, a Tourette’s Syndrome campaigner whose life was shaped by growing up with the condition in 1980s Britain, a time when public awareness was virtually nonexistent. Diagnosed at 15, Davidson struggles through adolescence and early adulthood, navigating misunderstanding, isolation, and the daily realities of living with Tourette’s while trying to carve out some version of a normal life.
The film has been propelled by Aramayo’s performance, which has already earned him a BAFTA win for Best Actor, alongside recognition at the British Independent Film Awards and multiple critics groups across the U.K. and Ireland. The project itself has also picked up nominations for Best Outstanding British Film and Best Original Screenplay, signaling a broader embrace beyond just its lead turn.
The supporting cast includes Peter Mullan (“War Horse”), Maxine Peake (“The Theory of Everything”), and Shirley Henderson (the “Harry Potter” series), grounding the film in a lineup of seasoned British character actors. That ensemble helps frame what appears to be a mix of social realism and crowd-pleasing uplift—an underdog story rooted in a condition still widely misunderstood.
The real-life Davidson, who later became an advocate and organizer for Tourette’s awareness and support groups in Scotland, was also the subject of a widely viewed BBC documentary as a teenager—one that helped bring the condition into public conversation at a time when little information existed. He was awarded an MBE in 2019 for his decades of advocacy work.
Jones, best known for the gentle, character-driven comedy “Waking Ned Devine,” returns here to similar terrain—human-scale storytelling built around resilience and community—but with a more overtly biographical and issue-driven focus.
